keyword density

A keyword is a term which are used to describe your content. So anything which you are putting in your content, which are searched by your readers to land up in your page are keywords.

Example : You have written a blog post which contains the term healthy diet several times. Your readers are searching an article with search terms as ‘How to have a very healthy diet?’ Naturally the search engines will put your blog in search results as your blog post have used the term healthy diet several times. So here the keyword is healthy diet which have made the reader landed up in your page.

A keyword Density is the percentage of number of times a particular keyword is used to the total number of words in a given post.

Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page. In the context of search engine optimization keyword density can be used as a factor in determining whether a web page is relevant to a specified keyword or keyword phrase.~ Wikipedia

Many online tools are available to calculate the keyword density. Using keyword density checker tools will tell you how many times different keyword phrases are used all throughout your post.

If you want to calculate keyword density for a particular word then you can do it manually too.

Let us take our previous example. Suppose you have written a post consisting of 500 words. You have mentioned the term healthy diet 5 times. (5/500)*100=1 . So here your Keyword Density will be 1%.

If your article is of 1000 words consisting your targeted keyword 5 times then it would be 0.5% as (5/1000)*100=0.5

Seo Keyword Density in particular means the keywords which will help in optimizing your website for search engines by making your page visible and rank for that particular keyword. SEO Keywords are the words which are typed by user to find particular articles so by using such terms more, you can increase the SEO keyword density. You can search your keywords by various tools present but one of the most used keyword tool is keyword planner which is a product of Google.

There are other keyword tools too like UberSuggest, Semrush whose paid version you tell you about the competition of particular keywords as well as suggest you with long tail keywords. It is you to decide whether you want to choose high or low competitive keywords.

You can use your targeted keyword more and more to increase your SEO keyword density. But very high keyword density does not mean that your page will rank high because using excess keyword density will affect your SEO negatively. Your readers may also find your article irritating with the repetition of the same words over and over again. So there is an optimal keyword density by which your post will not only be readable but also will be safe for Search Engine Optimization.

An optimal keyword density is between 0.5% to 2.5 %. If I want any of my post to be ideal for search engine then I always try to use my focused keyword between 0.6%-2.3%. When you use your targeted keyword over 2.5 % then it adversely effects your ranking.

Watch out the video from Google Webmasters about Keyword Density by Matt Cutt which explains how much you should use a particular keyword which should not hurt your SEO.

Check the video above also to know about keyword spamming.

Keyword spamming basically occurs when you try to put your targeted keyword way more than what is natural. You will generally not be labelled as keyword spammer if you naturally write your post. Some sites may put their targeted keywords several times below their posts which can be labelled as spam.

Keyword spamming can be easily avoided just by keeping your density level below recommended 2.5%.  Write your post naturally as if you are speaking to someone. This way you can easily avoid keyword spamming and get the optimal keyword density as inserting a particular phrase more than 6-7 times is not natural.

This is a question which bothers most of the people when they start blogging. Many one of us as faced the issue of very low keyword density. So check out some easy ways to insert the targeted word which can make your post more meaningful.

  1. Always use it the Title of the post.
  2. Use it in the first and last paragraph of your content as providing with an introduction and summarizing up as a conclusion will make the post more meaningful.
  3. Make a separate heading with your targeted keyword and use the keyword once more in its content.

OKAY so you have already used your keyword 5 times. So it automatically makes your keyword density ranging between 0.5%-1% for a 500-1000 words article. Easy Enough.

Things to avoid

There are many ways which are used to increase the keyword density. One of such ways is writing the keyword using the same font color as background. Yes that will definitely increase your keyword density and you may be expecting to rank well in search engines. But alas, search engines is not so stupid. 1. The thing is, keyword density doesn’t matter much any more. What’s important is to research your keyword well through Google Keyword Planner and you can use apps like BuzzSumo to check for the most shared content. Also, let’s not forget keyword placement. You should include the keyword in the URL, meta description, H1 and once or twice in the article (personally I do it in the first and last paragraph). Also, aim for long-tail keywords, as you are much more likely to rank for them than for common keywords. As for keyword density, even at 1.5-2%, which is what most folks say your keyword density should be, it feels unnatural in a post, especially if you are using long-tail keywords.

    1. Hello Vladimir thank you for an insightful remark. These days social media plays a very important role but to rank in SE keyword density will always matter. Yes 1.5-2 is un-natural for long tail keywords but we can use short secondary keywords to describe our posts well for the 1.5-2%.
