Revealing the Truth about Keyword Density + 5 Free Analyzer Tools

Are you searching ways to rank better in search engines? You can do it by setting SEO keyword density. All you need is to have your targeted keyword lying within the optimum density score. Optimal keyword density helps a lot in fetching organic traffic. Choosing targeted long tail keywords will make your posts rank well in search engines.

GUIDE TO OPTIMAL KEYWORD DENSITY

Let’s start with the term keyword.

WHAT IS A KEYWORD?

A keyword is a term which is used to describe your content. So anything which you are putting in your content, which is searched by your readers to land up in your page are keywords.

Example: You have written a blog post which contains the term healthy diet several times. Your readers are searching an article with search terms as ‘How to have a very healthy diet?’ Naturally, the search engines will put your blog in search results as your blog post has used the term healthy diet several times. So here the keyword is a healthy diet which has made the reader landed up on your page.

WHAT IS KEYWORD DENSITY?

A keyword Density is the percentage of a number of times a particular keyword is used to the total number of words in a given post.

Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page. In the context of search engine optimization keyword density can be used as a factor in determining whether a web page is relevant to a specified keyword or keyword phrase.~ Wikipedia

SO HOW IS KEYWORD DENSITY CALCULATED?

Yoast SEO already gives the keyword density score while we are writing a post. If you are not using Yoast SEO then many online tools are also available to check keyword density score.

If you want to calculate keyword density for a particular word then you can do it manually too.

For an example, you have written a post consisting of 500 words. You have mentioned the term healthy diet 5 times. (5/500)* 100=1. So here your Keyword Density will be 1%.

If your article is of 1000 words consisting your targeted keyword 5 times then it would be 0.5% as (5/1000)*100=0.5

WHAT IS THE OPTIMAL KEYWORD DENSITY?

This is a very debatable section as what should be the optimal keyword density to rank our posts. Yoast SEO says that it is ideal to have a keyword density of 1.5-2.5%. But with the use of long tail keywords, it is definitely not possible to use such long phrases over and over again.

You can definitely use your targeted keyword more often but using excess keywords will affect your SEO negatively.

In fact using the same keywords over and over again will irritate your readers too.

Watch out the video from Google Webmasters about Keyword Density by Matt Cutt which explains how much you should use a particular keyword which should not hurt your SEO.

HOW TO AVOID KEYWORD SPAMMING?

Check the video above also to know about keyword spamming.

Keyword spamming basically occurs when you try to put your targeted keyword way more than what is natural. You will generally not be labeled as keyword spammer if you naturally write your post. Some sites may put their targeted keywords several times below their posts which can be labeled as spam.

Keyword spamming can be easily avoided just by keeping your density level below recommended 2.5%.  Write your post naturally as if you are speaking to someone.

PROPER PLACEMENTS OF KEYWORDS

If you have a very low keyword density for your targeted keyword then the search engine will never know what your post is all about. So place your keyword in positions which will not irritate your readers and still manage to have a decent score.

  1. Always use it the Title of the post.
  2. Put your keyword in the slug.
  3. Use it in the first and last paragraph of your content as an introduction and conclusion. It will make the post more meaningful.
  4. Use your keywords in H1 & H2 headings.
  5. Bold the keywords sometimes if possible. Though I do not have any theoretical proof against this statement, in whichever post my keywords are bold, it seems to attract more organic visitors.

OKAY so now you have already used your keyword 5 times. So it automatically makes your keyword density ranging between 0.5%-1% for a 500-1000 words article. Easy Enough.

The thing is, keyword density doesn't matter much any more. What's important is to research your keyword well through Google Keyword Planner and you can use apps like BuzzSumo to check for the most shared content. Also, let's not forget keyword placement. You should include the keyword in the URL, meta description, H1 and once or twice in the article (personally I do it in the first and last paragraph). Also, aim for long-tail keywords, as you are much more likely to rank for them than for common keywords. As for keyword density, even at 1.5-2%, which is what most folks say your keyword density should be, it feels unnatural in a post, especially if you are using long-tail keywords.

Hello Vladimir thank you for an insightful remark. These days social media plays a very important role but to rank in SE keyword density will always matter. Yes 1.5-2 is un-natural for long tail keywords but we can use short secondary keywords to describe our posts well for the 1.5-2%.
